A dream

A Dream by Jorge Luis Borges

In a deserted place in Iran there is a not very tall stone tower that has neither door nor window. In the only room (with a dirt floor and shaped like a circle) there is a wooden table and a bench. In that circular cell, a man who looks like me is writing in letters I cannot understand a long poem about a man who in another circular cell is writing a poem about a man who in another circular cell . . . The process never ends and no one will be able to read what the prisoners write.

Hôm nay đọc The New Yorker thấy bài thơ A dream của Jorge Luis Borges, qua bản dịch của Suzanne Jill Levine. Tôi thấy thích bài thơ này và thử dịch ra tiếng Việt. Công nhận, The New Yorker đưa bài thơ này rất hợp thời. Không rõ Borges sáng tác bài thơ này vào năm nào. Thẩm mỹ về chuỗi vô tận, A trong A trong A ... rất hợp với tư duy phương Đông, không có khởi đầu và không có kết thúc, và con người chỉ còn có thể bất lực mà thôi. Nhưng thực ra các chuỗi vô tận không hẳn đã là vô tận. Chúng có một giới hạn, giống như nghịch lý Achilles đuổi rùa của Hy Lạp cổ đại. Cái giới hạn đấy là lúc con người có thể đọc được những gì mà những người tù đã viết ra.

Ở một nơi hoang vắng ở Iran có một tháp đá không cao lắm, không có cửa cũng như cửa sổ. Trong căn phòng duy nhất (với nền đất và có dạng hình tròn) có một chiếc bàn gỗ và một chiếc ghế băng. Trong ngục tròn đó có một người nom giống như tôi đang viết chữ mà tôi không thể hiểu, một bài thơ dài về một người trong một ngục tròn khác đang viết một bài thơ về một người trong một ngục tròn khác... Bác ĐA bẩu: Cái giới hạn đấy là lúc con người có thể đọc được những gì mà những người tù đã viết ra.

Giới hạn đấy là thế nào?

Hình như để có thể hiểu được mình phải xem lại kiến thức toán học về chuỗi số. Nhớ lại chút, thì như là chuỗi số thì kéo dài vô hạn, nhưng tổng của chuỗi thì hữu hạn. Giống như một tảng thịt nặng 60 kí lô là hữu hạn, nhưng ta có thể cắt nó ra thành vô số các tảng nhỏ, số các tảng nhỏ có thể là vô hạn.

Vậy, vấn đề thứ nhứt là ta đang có tảng thịt nặng 60 kí lô hay chỉ là các tảng nhỏ của nó.

Vấn đề thứ hai là nếu ta chỉ có các tảng nhỏ, thì làm sao biết được cái tảng lớn. Tức là cách đọc. Ví dụ như với một bản nhạc, anh đọc những nốt nhạc và có thể đọc cả khoảng trống giữa những nốt nhạc ấy. Khoảng trống giữa những nốt nhạc hay quy luật giữa những con số... Đại khái thế!

Vấn đề thứ ba, mí là vấn đề quan tọng, là ta có muốn đọc hay không. Hông mún, thì thôi, cũng hông ai ép. Đọc tiếp →
